Miles Overview
The SL is Mercedes' two-seat luxury roadster, the drop-top you cross-shop with the Porsche 911 Cabriolet and the BMW 6 Series convertible. It's a grand tourer first, so it wafts down the highway with effortless composure, yet the AMG versions bring serious punch when you want it. Inside, the cabin is trimmed in wood and leather, and the power-folding hardtop keeps the look clean whether it's up or down. Owners note the window seals can let in wind noise at speed, and the hardtop eats into trunk space when stowed. Its 4.7L V8 makes 449 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, routed through a nine-speed automatic that shuffles gears quickly enough to keep the boost spooled. The adaptive dampers let you dial from cushy grand touring to firm cornering, so the SL 550 feels right on a cross-country trip or a back road.
