Miles Overview
The 5 Series is BMW's mid-size executive sedan, the one most people cross-shop with the Audi A6 and Mercedes E-Class. It's a car that rewards an eager driver, with precise steering and a chassis that feels planted through fast corners. The ride is on the firm side, especially with the larger wheels, but it stays composed over broken pavement. Inside, the cabin is roomy for four adults, and the trunk is generous for a sedan of this size. The 535d is the diesel choice for buyers who want the 5 Series' highway manners without the fuel stops of the 535i. Its 3.0L I6 makes 255 horsepower and a stout 413 lb-ft of torque, paired with a eight-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive that returns 30 mpg combined. The diesel's torque comes on low and strong, so you'll rarely need to rev it out to get moving.
