Miles Overview
The 5 Series is BMW's mid-size executive sedan, the one most people cross-shop with the Audi A6 and Mercedes E-Class. It's a car that rewards an eager driver, with precise steering and a chassis that feels planted through fast corners. The ride is on the firm side, especially with the larger wheels, but it stays composed over broken pavement. Inside, the cabin is roomy for four adults, and the trunk is generous for a sedan of this size. The 550i xDrive gives up the ActiveHybrid 5's fuel savings for a 4.4L V8 that makes 443 horsepower and standard all-wheel drive. The 4.4L V8 and eight-speed automatic deliver strong, effortless acceleration, and the all-wheel drive adds all-weather grip without dulling the steering feel. Expect fuel economy around 19 mpg combined, which is the trade-off for the V8's power and the sedan's planted handling.
