Miles Overview
The 5 Series is BMW's mid-size executive sedan, the one that set the benchmark for how a sports sedan should feel. It's the car that made people understand why BMW was called the Ultimate Driving Machine, with sharp steering and a chassis that loves a back road. Inside, the cabin is a lesson in restraint and quality, with firm seats and controls that fall perfectly to hand. The trunk is respectably sized for a sedan of this era, and the rear seat fits two adults comfortably, three in a pinch. The V8 engine sets the 540i apart from the six-cylinder 525i and 530i, giving it the muscle to match its sporty intentions. The I8 in this 540i makes 290 horsepower and sends it to the rear wheels through a manual transmission, which is the enthusiast's choice for this generation. With the manual gearbox, you get the full measure of that V8's flexibility, though it's a rare find and worth holding onto.
