Miles Overview
The 5 Series is BMW's mid-size executive sedan, the one most people cross-shop with the Audi A6 and Mercedes E-Class. It's a car that rewards an eager driver, with precise steering and a chassis that feels planted through fast corners. The ride is on the firm side, especially with the larger wheels, but it stays composed over broken pavement. Inside, the cabin is roomy for four adults, and the trunk is generous for a sedan of this size. Stepping up from the 535i to the xDrive adds all-weather traction without changing the car's character or the engine's responsive feel. The 3.0L I6 pulls smoothly from low revs, and the eight-speed automatic shifts quickly when you want it to hustle. With xDrive, the 5 Series feels firmly planted in rain or snow, though the added hardware brings a slight weight penalty you can sense in quick transitions.
