Miles Overview
The 5 Series is BMW's executive sedan, the one that splits the difference between the 3 Series and the 7 Series. It's the rare car that feels smaller than it is, with a planted, confident stance that makes long highway miles easy. Inside, the cabin is quiet and well-built, with supportive seats and plenty of room for four adults. The big curved display runs BMW's latest iDrive, which pairs crisp graphics with a rotary controller that's easy to use on the move. The 550e xDrive swaps the 540i's pure six-cylinder for a plug-in hybrid setup, bumping power to 483 horsepower and adding 34 miles of range of electric-only driving. Its 3.0L I6 plug-in hybrid pairs an electric motor with the eight-speed automatic for seamless launches and a smooth, torquey pull that makes city driving feel effortless. The hybrid system nets combined fuel economy of 24 mpg combined, and you can expect a quiet, refined ride with the added weight of the battery pack.
