Miles Overview
The 1997 4Runner is a body-on-frame SUV that feels more like a truck than today's crossovers. It's geared for driver comfort and handles well enough, but taller passengers will find legroom tight. Fold the rear seats and you get a huge cargo area, plus useful side compartments for tools or jumper cables. Owners note the paint and clear coat fade on the hood and roof, and sunroof leaks can happen if it's not closed fully. Rear disc brakes and standard four-wheel drive set the SR5 apart from the base model, which still used rear drums and two-wheel drive. The 3.4L V6 makes 183 horsepower and pairs with four-wheel drive, giving it real traction on dirt and snow without needing to shift into low range. A locking rear differential was available on the SR5, a feature that serious off-roaders still seek out on the used market today.
