2018 Mazda CX-9 Sport

The CX-9 is Mazda's three-row family SUV, the one you cross-shop with the Highlander and Pilot when you want something that feels less like a minivan. It drives smaller than it looks, with responsive steering and a firm, controlled ride that keeps body roll in check on winding roads. Inside, the cabin feels upscale for the price, with quality materials and a clean layout, though the third row is best left to kids and the cargo space shrinks when it's up. Owners report solid reliability overall, with a few early battery issues and one rear shock replacement, but most say maintenance has been care-free. Its 2.5L I4 makes 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive that returns 24 mpg combined. The Sport rides on 18-inch wheels and lacks the upgraded suspension of higher trims, so the ride is a bit softer but less tied down on curves.
