Miles Overview
The GLS is Mercedes' full-size luxury SUV, the one you cross-shop with the BMW X7 and the Range Rover. It's a big SUV that drives smaller than it is, with a composed ride and plenty of power from every engine. Inside, the cabin is genuinely opulent, with three rows of seats that fit adults in the back and a huge cargo area behind the third row. The dual 12.3-inch screens run Mercedes' latest MBUX system, and the standard driver aids include active braking and blind-spot monitoring. Stepping up to the GLS 580 swaps the six-cylinder for a biturbo V8 with mild-hybrid assist, giving you effortless passing power and a richer exhaust note. Its 4.0L V8 makes 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, routed through a nine-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, and returns 18 mpg combined. The standard AIRMATIC air suspension keeps the ride plush on the highway and can raise the body for off-road clearance or lower it for easier loading.
