Miles Overview
The 2002 Avalanche is Chevrolet's half-truck, half-SUV, blending a crew cab with a short pickup bed. It rides more like a big SUV than a truck, which owners say makes long trips surprisingly comfortable. The midgate folds down with the rear seats to extend the bed into the cabin, so you can haul eight-foot lumber with the tailgate closed. Some owners report the transmission and tires wearing early, and the dash can crack after years in the sun. The 1500 is the lighter-duty Avalanche, and stepping up to it from the base rear-drive model adds four-wheel drive for better traction in snow or mud. Its 5.3L V8 makes 285 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque, routed through a four-speed automatic to all four wheels, which gives it confident pulling power but returns 13 mpg combined.
