Miles Overview
The Matrix is Toyota's compact hatchback, a practical little wagon that shares its bones with the Corolla. It's nimble around town and easy to park, though the base engine feels a bit sluggish on the highway. The rear seats fold flat to open up a huge cargo area, and owners rave about hauling everything from furniture to stacks of computers. Some owners mention peeling clear coat and flimsy plastic trim that can detach, but these are cosmetic issues that don't affect driving. The XRS is the sporty top trim, trading the base model's fuel economy for a punchier 2.4L I4 and firmer suspension. Its 2.4L I4 makes 158 horsepower and pairs with the automatic transmission, which gives it real highway passing power but returns only 22 mpg combined.
