Miles Overview
The Matrix is Toyota's compact wagon for 2003, a practical five-door that blends car-like handling with the cargo space of a small SUV. Inside, you get a tall seating position and a versatile rear seat that folds flat, but the back row is snug for three adults. Owners report this era of Matrix as very reliable, with many racking up over 200,000 miles on routine maintenance alone. The base Matrix is the one to pick if you want the most affordable way into a versatile five-door wagon, skipping the XR's extra equipment and the AWD of the XRS. It uses a 1.8L I4 and front-wheel drive, which feels eager around town but needs a firm foot on the highway to keep up with traffic. The trade for the base trim's lower price is a simpler interior and no tachometer, though the folding rear seats give it the same cargo flexibility as the pricier versions.
