Miles Overview
The Matrix is Toyota's compact hatchback, a practical five-door that shares its bones with the Corolla but adds a tall, versatile cargo area. It's easy to drive and park, with a light, nimble feel that makes city errands a breeze. The cabin is roomy for the size, with a high seating position and a rear seat that folds flat to swallow bulky loads. Owners report this generation is remarkably dependable, with many racking up well over 200,000 miles on routine maintenance alone. The base Matrix gives up the XR's alloy wheels and upgraded audio, but you save money and still get the same practical hatchback body. Its 1.8L I4 pairs with a automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, which is plenty for daily driving and returns good fuel economy around town.
