Miles Overview
The Matrix is Toyota's compact hatchback, a practical little wagon that shares its bones with the Corolla. It's nimble around town and easy to park, though the base engine feels a bit sluggish on the highway. The rear seats fold flat to open up a huge cargo area, and owners rave about hauling everything from furniture to stacks of computers. Some owners mention peeling clear coat and flimsy plastic trim that can detach, but these are cosmetic issues that don't affect driving. The XRS swaps the base car's 1.8L for a 2.4L I4, giving you 158 horsepower and a sportier character than the standard Matrix. Paired with a five-speed automatic and front-wheel drive, it feels livelier around town but returns 24 mpg combined. Expect a firmer ride from the XRS's sport-tuned suspension, which sharpens cornering at the cost of some comfort on rough pavement.
