Miles Overview
The 1997 Wrangler is Jeep's compact off-roader, the one with the removable top and doors that's built for trails more than pavement. Its short wheelbase and solid axles make it incredibly capable on rocky trails, though the ride is bouncy and the steering is vague on the highway. The back seat is small and cargo space disappears when it's in use, so it's best for two people and their gear. Owners note the soft top can wear out and the plastic fender flares fade, but most issues are easy to fix yourself with inexpensive parts. The 4.0L inline-six and standard four-wheel drive set the Sport apart from the base SE, which gets a smaller engine. The 4.0L I6 makes 181 horsepower and 222 lb-ft of torque, giving it enough grunt for highway merging and steep climbs. The Sport's standard five-speed manual transmission is the one to get for off-road control, but this one has the optional five-speed automatic.
