Miles Overview
The 1998 Cherokee is the boxy, body-on-frame SUV that defined off-road capability for a generation. It feels planted and confident on dirt, and the short wheelbase makes it surprisingly nimble on tight trails. The interior is simple and durable, though rear legroom is tight and cargo space behind the back seat is minimal. Owners note the headliner tends to sag, the plastic trim fades, and overheating can occur in stop-and-go traffic. Upgraded cloth seats and a standard four-speed automatic set the Sport apart from the base SE, though it still lacks the Limited's leather and wood trim. Its torquey 4.0L I6 makes 190 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque, and with four-wheel drive it pulls confidently through mud and rocks while returning 16 mpg combined.
