Miles Overview
The Cherokee is the compact SUV that defined the segment, with a boxy shape that still looks purposeful today. It rides stiff and feels a bit rickety on pavement, but that's the trade for a four-wheel-drive system that can wade through high water and climb trails easily. The interior is simple and durable, with a huge amount of cargo space when the back seat folds down and large windows that give you a clear view all around. These Cherokees are easy to work on with cheap parts, though older ones do have common issues like rear main seal leaks and failing electrical switches. The Sport trim gives you the burly 4.0L V6 and four-wheel drive as standard, skipping the base model's weaker four-cylinder and part-time system. Its 4.0L inline-six pulls strongly from low rpm, and the automatic transmission shifts smoothly whether you're crawling rocks or merging onto the highway. The Sport's standard four-wheel drive includes a two-speed transfer case, so you can shift into low range for serious trail work without any option boxes checked.
