Miles Overview
The 2004 Explorer is Ford's mid-size SUV, the one that defined the segment for years and still competes with the Chevy TrailBlazer and Jeep Grand Cherokee. The cabin is roomy, with third-row seating that folds flat for hauling, though the fabric seats show wear quickly with kids. Owners mention blend door actuators, gear indicator failures, and rust around the rear window as common issues to watch for. The XLS is the base Explorer, giving up the Limited's leather and Eddie Bauer's V8 for a lower starting price. Its 4.0L V6 makes 210 horsepower and pairs with a five-speed automatic sending power to the rear wheels, good for 16 mpg combined.
