Miles Overview
The F-550 is Ford's heavy-duty work truck, the one you see on tow trucks and service bodies, not in a mall parking lot. It's a truck built to haul serious weight, so the ride is firm and the steering is truck-like, but that's the trade for its capability. The cabin is plain and functional, with hard plastics and simple controls, exactly what you'd expect in a workhorse. Running costs are high, with diesel fuel and heavy maintenance, but that's the price of a truck that can tow and haul like this. The XL is the base trim, so you skip the chrome and carpet of higher trims, but you get the same chassis and powertrain for less money. The 6.8L V10 makes 362 horsepower and pairs with a automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, giving it the grunt for heavy towing without the complexity of a diesel.
