Miles Overview
The 1996 Mustang is Ford's pony car, offered as a coupe or convertible with the GT and Cobra trims leading the performance charge. It's quick and eager, with a rear-drive layout that makes it a blast on back roads, though the light rear end can get squirmy in the wet or snow. The cabin is snug, especially for back-seat passengers, but the front seats are comfortable and the controls are straightforward. Owners mention sagging doors that leak, and the aluminum cylinder heads can spit out spark plugs if not torqued right. The Cobra is the range-topping Mustang for 1996, giving you a stronger engine and sharper suspension than the GT for a higher price. Its 4.6L V8 makes 260 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, paired with a five-speed manual and rear-wheel drive, good for 19 mpg combined. The Cobra's independent rear suspension is unique to this trim, giving it better grip and a more settled feel than the GT's solid axle.
